During the week of June 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One driver was under the age of 21.

During the week of June 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One driver was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 7; South Hilo, 6; Puna and South Kohala, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 570 DUI arrests compared to 630 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.5 percent.

There have been 618 major accidents so far this year compared to 673 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.2 percent.

So far this year, there have been 17 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 21.4 percent.

Police say that to date, four fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: one to drugs; one to alcohol; and two, a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
